My top hat makes me a celebrity?

I like to wear a top hat. I wear it a lot of the time when I'm out and about because I'm my opinion they are just about the coolest hats around and I think it suits me.

However It does make blending into a crowd a little difficult...

I've posted this photo before but I'll re-post it because I don't think I explained the story behind it:

I got spotted by a 'talent scout' for a clothes show modelling competition. It was for Suzuki Streets Ahead and they were looking for 'fashionistas and creators of cool'. Me? A fashionista? Really?????? I think it might have been one of those day when I was accidently 'on trend' or something, because when I turned up for the next round of the competition... there was honestly dead silence when the Birmingham public were asked if I should go through to the catwalk show =P I got free tickets for my trouble though so the humiliation in front of a couple hundred people was worth it, besides not one person I knew was there so no one saw me looking like an idiot on a stage whilst a 'celebrity stylist' tried to tell people how to dress like me 'well, really, without the hat, its a quite wearable look, you can get tights like those in any high st store... urrrmmm... where did you say your shoes were from?'. It wasn't the same outfit but thankfully I managed to escape without any pictures that time! Although I did like it so I'm sure I'll wear it again sometime and take photos for you guys.

So I went to the clothes show and what did I buy there? Another top hat. The one I'm wearing in the picture is a collapsible silk one so I can't wear it in the rain or any other risky situation! The clothes show one was cheap enough that I can wear it out clubbing and not worry about it getting wrecked.; if it gets a bit battered I think it'll just add some whimsical charm.

I never thought it would happen again, but yesterday I got stopped by a photographer who wanted to take my picture because he 'noticed the hat'. He gave me his card and said he'd email the pictures, so I hope he does (although his flickr page doesn't exist so I'm not holding out too much hope...). He was quite cool looking himself in a 'I'm an old steampunk geezer' type of way.

I hope I get some pictures to share with you, although I do wish I'd bothered to dry my hair before leaving the house now =P

Have any of you ever been stopped and asked for pictures?

  1. You look fancy and dapper. I'm a big believer in hats. I think half of what it takes to look good in a hat is confidence that you look good in a hat.

As for getting stopped to ask for pictures, it happens to me sometimes, usually by a some random person (that is to say, a non-professional photographer). The one time a professional photographer asked for my picture, I politely declined and he gave me his card anyway. I checked out his online portfolio later - it was porn. S & M bondage faux-snuff porn. Glad I declined that.

    1. I'm glad you declined too! I'm now a bit worried because I can't see the work of this photographer online...

    2. Well, it's not as if the photographer can do much with a picture alone, and yours looked cool. Mine looked skeevy. :(

    3. True. I hope I don't see it somewhere creepy though!

  2. The story is pretty cool, it is one of those things you can tell your grandchildren one day! I love the hat, it suits you very well!

When my best friend and I were walking through Cologne about 5 years ago she told me that she was always asked for pictures from tourists around the cathedral because of her alternative style. We had pretty similar styles at that point and that sort of things had never happend to me before so naturally I didn't really believe it. About half an hour later a tourist came up to us... "Can I take a picture, please"...

    1. I love Cologne cathedral! I saw it on a school trip but I couldn't go inside; I had to stay in the group the teachers allocated and everyone else wanted to go shopping!

I bet it was nice being a tourist attraction for the day =]

I doubt I'll have kids, so I'll let me great-nieces and nephews instead!

  3. I am in love with this! It looks so nice and put together- the coat, the shoes, the hat! Ahh I've always wanted a top hat since I was a little kid. I don't know where my fascination for them came from but it just randomly happened.

As for getting asked for a photograph, that constantly happens. Especially when I put up my deathhawk. Usually people try to be sneaky and photograph me without my knowledge.

    1. I've always liked them too; maybe it was because i read Alice in Wonderland a lot?

I haven't noticed people trying to sneak pictures of me. One guy rushed over with a camera phone laughing saying 'I'm definitely taking a picture of this' when I was with a friend so we told him to fuck off; I don't want someone who thinks I'm a joke to have my picture!

Your deathhawk is so awesome I can see why people would want to take pictures!

    1. I think top hats look equally good on men, women and every shade in between, perhaps for slightly different reasons, but they are just inherently wonderful hats!

People treat me a little differently in shops too; they act polite as if I was actually from the Victorian era, or just stare!

Wow, I think it's pretty cool that you can drive any car with a top hat on, must make other motorists smile! Maybe you could get a short dressage top hat for driving your car, they need less headroom!

  6. That outfit is just amazing so I'm not surprised they spotted you! :)
I've also realized that people stare a lot when one is wearing a hat. I sometimes wear small Victorian hats and people always comments them or ask if they can touch them. Pretty strange, I think. :)

    1. Ooh small Victorian hats! That sounds adorable!

I find people ask to touch (or touch without asking) big poofy skirts too!
