A goth wearing pastels?

I mentioned in my post about style experiments that I would be customizing a pink jumper I've had languishing in a drawer for years and including it in some outfits - to see if I can get into wearing pastels! Don't worry, I don't intend to drop any of my other style influences (or my mostly monochromatic wardrobe), but Fairy Kei and even Nu-Goth have shown me that pastels can look pretty cool. Not to mention the Lady of the Manners fondness for Black and Pink!

However, can pastels work on me?

You decide:

Once again, ignore my lack of head - It's a very bad skin week.

What I'm wearing:
Jumper - Primark a few years ago £10
Skirts - Black Pinafore dress - Miss Selfridge, Black lace skirt - New Look
Tights - Black Flower Print - Primark, Pink - Primark kids (they are a tiny bit short in the leg but I couldn't find any adult tights in pale pink)
Brooch - Isn't it adorable? And it's vintage. I brought it from SugarPinkMoon on Etsy, a shop run by Beth Leintz of Gathering Dust.
Detachable collar - made by me because I couldn't find a nice black one. It's made from some left over black cotton fabric, with interfacing between the two layers for a bit of rigidity. Then I stitched on lace trim and the ribbon ties. The back fastens with a lobster clasp and has an extender chain to make it a bit more adjustable.

In this close -up you can see that my attempt to customize the jumper was not entirely successful.
I used more of the left over cotton I used for the collar but despite the fact I ironed all the fabric onto fusible interfacing it still frayed quite a bit, so the edges aren't very neat.

If it continues to fray i'll have to make new stars and moons (don't worry I kept my newspaper pattern pieces) from different fabric - probably use an old black t-shirt.

I think it looks like something Hermione would wear to the Library at Christmas, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, right? She's cool =P

What do you guys think? Pastels yay or nay?

  1. Hermione's the coolest! :D
This outfit is lovely <3 it's not creepy cute, I wouldn't even say it's pastel goth, but it's akin to both of them. I think it's some sort of dolly kei :). The sweater has some sort of dreamy vibe, I like it; you matched your clothes very well. I'm curious to see the shoes you wore them with though :D

    1. Some sort of Dolly Kei sounds good to me. I think I could ramp up the Creepy Cute vibe easily with different accessories and co-ordination. May try that next time! Maybe less dream and more nightmare =P Although dreamy is good too!

Thanks. I didn't actually end up leaving the house, but if I had I'd have worn my DM's with frilly boot covers (It's too cold for anything else - snow and everything!)

  2. Your sweather is cool...keep it!
I don't see why all the fuss about goths wearing pastels...why not, if you like it? :)

    1. Thanks!

Very good point, and certainly true. A lot of pastel colours look bad with my skin tone though, they make me look yellow - the pink seems OK though. I may try lilac or lavender next!

  4. If you hadn't said anything, I would have thought that was cream instead of pink. I don't think wearing pastels is a problem (for goths or anyone else) unless you're wearing ALL pastels, and then you look like an Easter egg. So you're fine in my book!

    1. It is quite a pale pink, but the flash made it look a lot lighter too.

Hehe, no I wouldn't want to look like an Easter egg! As tasty as they are =P

  5. Oh, I love it! The jumper is wonderful. I love the moons and stars, but I've always loved patterns like that. Good luck with the fraying.

    1. Thanks, I may need the luck! I love moons and stars too, that's why I picked them. Also it makes a change from my recent bat obsession!

  6. Combined like this even I would wear pastels! :D That whole outfit is adorable and I don't think the pastel pink is any problem at all. On the contrary it makes the outfit more interesting. :)

  7. Seriously, I love this outfit so much, even the fraying stars and moons on your sweater. If the fraying bothers you though, there's actually stuff you can pick up (usually at craft stores) that stop fraying fabrics. I need to get some myself.

But hey, rock the pastels! They can be a lot of fun.

    1. Ooh, I will have to get something like that. Why didn't I think of it myself? I usually use PVA glue to stop ribbons fraying when I've cut them, but for my clothes maybe I should get the proper stuff!

Yeah lots of fun, I'm just finding that out, who knew eh? After 7 years of colour phobia, certainly not me =P

  8. I actually really like it! I think it looks very well put together. I own a light pink sweater-dress type thing that I'm really unsure about because I'm a little uncomfortable wearing colours (especially pale ones)but you make it look so great that I might try it out one day =)

  10. I'm liking this. The collar and vintage brooch are aweseome! I say good for you for doing something different, I enjoy when people have their own style rather than treating the whole goth thing like a uniform.
